Qiaotou, is one of the native villages in Shenzhen.

The village has developed into a diverse community since the first arrival of the Lins. The Lin family has lived here for over twenty generations, and has established an unique native language and culture alongside the traditional ones.

It is a reflection of Shenzhen’s pluralistic and open-minded images, with its traditional Cantonese culture and modern diverse community composition.

Qiaotou é uma das aldeias indígenas de Shenzhen.

A povoação desenvolveu-se uma comunidade diversificada desde a primeira chegada dos Lins. A família Lin vive ali há mais de vinte gerações, tendo estabelecido uma língua e uma cultura autóctones únicas a par das tradicionais.

Com o tempo, a aldeia transformou-se numa comunidade diversificada. É um reflexo da impressão pluralista e de espírito aberto de Shenzhen, com a sua cultura tradicional cantonesa e a composição diversificada da comunidade.

The Chinese character of Lin is 林, which means woods and forest.

For Cantonese people, ancestral halls are the most important symbols of the traditional culture of the Guangdong patriarchal system. Ancestral halls are as important as churches in the Catholic Church, where you can pray, honour the memory of your ancestors and those who are in the same family.

It used to be an unifying symbol， demonstrating power and prosperity of a family or village.

Para os cantoneses, os salões dos antepassados são os símbolos mais importantes da cultura tradicional do sistema patriarcal de Cantão. Os salões dos antepassados são tão importantes como as igrejas da Igreja Católica, onde se pode rezar, honrar a memória dos antepassados e daqueles que pertencem à mesma família.

Costumava ser um símbolo unificador, demonstrando o poder e a prosperidade de uma família ou aldeia.

The local residents of qiaotou used to make their livings on the sea.

Since fishing was the major business activity, so I created a pattern using the chinese letter “人“, people in english.

In order to manage the village efficiently, the residents of the village formed a Rural Committee.

The committee is responsible for business activities and exercising administrative policies. Members of the board are generated by the general election and it is under the supervision of the resident representatives.

The image is inspired by the Qiaotou Plaza, known as Qiaotou Theatre.

The building used to be a theatre playing Cantonese Opera. We had spent so much time during my childhood enjoying the opera in front of the stage. People used to gather in here carrying their plastic chairs. It is our annual celebration.

If the ancestral hall is a symbol of blood and family, the theatre is an other symbol of the community and our lifestyle.
